St Mary's Free Church, Broughton Street, Edinburgh

‡Unexecuted competition design, c.1858

Perspective drawing with ground plan pasted on, now at GSA

McFadzean*; McKean*; David Walker in ATSN no10 May 1994*

Unexecuted design for a church with a tower and other elements similar to those on the St Vincent Street Church, q.v.; often described as being for St George's Church, Edinburgh, it has been demonstrated by David Walker that the design corresponds with the site on the corner of Broughton Street and Albany Street occupied by St Mary's Free Church by J.T. Rochead, 1859 (above, right). The church has since been demolished, although the adjacent manse in Albany Street remains.

The drawing was presented to the RIAS by Thomson's son John in 1932.
